The 'small' group were really excited to be making JELLYFISH this last week in Art Class.  We used clear plastic bags, turquoise sparkle netting with bright pink and yellow twine to create our underwater creatures.

We let these creations float around in our homemade aquarium - the blue water caused quite a stir!!!

A special thanks to Jett for sharing the lovely book that Gran and Grandpa had given to him on Sharks and other creatures.  He remembered we were working on jellyfish and brought his book to school.

Thank you also to Longview Public Library for kindly sourcing all of the books we used this week on Jellyfish.

The students liked this poem by Jack Prelutsky called 'Jellyfish Stew':

Jellyfish stew,
I'm loony for you,
I dearly adore you,
oh, truly I do,
you're creepy to see,
revolting to chew,
you slide down inside
with a hullabaloo.

You're soggy,  you're smelly,
you taste like shampoo,
you bog down my belly
with oodles of goo,
yet I would glue noodles
and prunes to my shoe,
for one oozy spoonful
of jellyfish stew.

A wee sneak preview of the older students' cake paintings.  We are working small scale and using all of the beautiful frames that parents donated to frame the artworks.  They are looking great already and everyone has been working well together.

This lovely message below from Bryce Gardner's Mom really says it all.  It was a pleasure to listen to Kerry and Bryce talk about their Family House Academy experience on Monday evening and even nicer to know that the school's philosophy remains with them as a way of living their lives:

I remember when Bryce first came to Family House and you asked me what were some goals I had for Bryce.  Not just next week or next year, but for his future.  I had not thought that far ahead before, but when I did I told you that I hoped someday he would be able to drive.  Can you believe it!  You helped me to believe that anything is possible.  Thank you Lisa, I love you!

It was an honor to welcome Elsie Windes into our community on Wednesday.  Her visit to the classroom was such a wonderful experience for all
of us! She won a Silver medal 2008 in Beijing and a Gold medal 2012 in
London competing in water polo!  She was humble and so inspirational!

Below is a photograph of Elsie with staff and students and another with Dylan Q and Elsie.

We look forward to lots more inspiring and beautiful photographs of Elsie with each Family House student at the forthcoming Art Auction!!

Last night, Thursday December 19th was December's Community Service Event.  This was a beautiful example of the students giving and sharing.  They shared their joy of singing, performing and reading and gave out hand made blankets to members of our community.  You will be able to see from the images above and below that this was an evening filled with love and hope.  Thank you so much to all involved and to the Electric Bean Cafe for hosting this event.

We had another busy week of learning at Family House Academy.  We have been focusing on Social Intelligence, Social Agility this month.  What a lovely image of our students continuing their Community Service in collecting warm clothing for Syria - demonstrating their consideration for others.

We would like to share some images of our 'Zest' learning activities from Day 1 and Day 2 of our new school year!  We explored representing 'Zest' in a mixed media approach.

The younger class colored with their eyes closed and drew with markers/brushes/pencils taped onto twigs to discover how we work differently when we have less control over outcomes.

Lastly we have images of our completed ZEST artworks.

We hope you enjoy looking at the photographs.

This week as a staff, we discussed Chapter 2 of Paul Tough's book 'How Children Succeed' (see 'Books We Are Reading' page for a link to this book). Tough explores research on the idea of character and personality and how elements of these can be taught in school.

The 'top seven' are:

Grit, Self-Control, Zest, Social Intelligence, Gratitude, Optimism and Curiosity.

We decided to focus on ZEST for the beginning of our new school year.

When someone has ZEST, what does this look like?
How does it feel to be around someone with ZEST?
Can ZEST be measured?

If we educate a student we impact one. If we educate a parent, we impact a family. If we educate a family, we impact the community.
